We Handle All Types of Family Law Cases

When people hear “family law,” they first think of divorce. Divorce, called a dissolution of marriage in Indiana, is just one example of a family law case. Sometimes a divorce is preceded by a legal separation, which financially separates you and your spouse without terminating the marriage. In some cases, the parties to a legal separation ultimately choose to end the marriage by converting the legal separation to a divorce.

Either a divorce or a legal separation can involve many different types of legal issues:

Understanding Indiana Divorce Law

At Camden & Meridew, we believe you should be a meaningful part of your case, not merely an observer. To accomplish that, we help you understand the Indiana divorce process and Indiana divorce laws generally.

To start a family law case, one person files a petition with the court requesting an order for divorce or a legal separation. The court will review the information in the petition, which should give notice of the types of matters at issue, such as whether there are children of the marriage. If the parties agree on all necessary points in the case, they can file a written document detailing their agreement. For points on which they don’t agree, either or both parties may request a court hearing.

When all matters have been resolved, either by agreement or by the court’s determination, the court enters an order in the case. In the case of a divorce, the court enters a dissolution decree. The decree ends the marriage and sets out the parties’ respective rights and obligations going forward on matters such as property division, child custody, child support, and parenting time (visitation).

Family law issues can arise months or years after a divorce is final, especially if there are children of the marriage. We offer divorce attorneys in Indianapolis and surrounding county cases from start to finish. We’re also available if you’re looking for new counsel in your case.
